Grief is the psychological, physical and emotional way we express the pain we feel when we lose someone or something we are deeply attached to. Grief is part of human nature and helps each of us cope with the shock of separation or death. The painful experience of grief varies at different stages of life, from the intense pain of losing a loved one, through losing a job, the breakdown of friendships and relationships, the loss of health and youth, or being far from home, to the loss of dreams and the collapse of principles and ideals. And there is also the collective grief we feel when a public figure dies.

How to Overcome Grief looks at several aspects of grief, including:

  • Recognizing grief in its different forms
  • Accepting grief and avoiding its complications
  • Support from family and friends
  • Religious rituals and other ways of grieving positively
  • Therapy and medication
  • Difficult situations such as the death of a child or a loved one

The book draws on the author's many meetings with patients, as she is an experienced psychotherapist, and uses illustrative examples to explain grief. Although when someone dear to us dies we may think we will never be the same again, in the end we can all move beyond our grief and play an active part in our own journey of healing.
